Egan City Council Acknowledges Withdrawal of Blue Cross Road Land Use Plan

The Egan City Council acknowledged the withdrawal of a comprehensive land use plan for 3535 and 3544 Blue Cross Road, which was related to the Blue Cross Blue Shield headquarters property. The petitioner, Opus, withdrew their application, meaning the proposal is no longer active and the council will take no further action. Opus has the right to reapply in the future, which would initiate the same process as the previous application. This withdrawal was seen as a success for community involvement in the development process, a concept that may be threatened by pending state legislation that could allow by-right housing development in commercial zones, potentially removing community and council input. The council noted that this was the first proposal from Opus on that site, and that Opus has a contractual relationship with the property owner. The neighbors had the opportunity to comment on the proposal, which involved housing, during previous Planning Commission and City Council meetings.
