Pawlet Select Board - June 23, 2026

Basketball Hoop Debate: Temporary Stay Granted Amidst Compromise Talks
The board discussed a request from Gibb to remove a basketball hoop from the library parking area, which had been in place for children's use due to the lack of a playground. Concerns were raised about the hoop obstructing parking during events and snow removal issues. Several compromises were suggested, including moving the hoop to a grassy area or adjusting its position. Ultimately, the board agreed to allow the hoop to remain in its current location temporarily until a permanent solution is found, acknowledging the importance of recreational spaces for children.
Town Prioritizes Temporary Lighting Grant Application
The board discussed applying for grants for temporary lighting and municipal sign packages. After considering the costs and grant limits, the board voted to apply for the temporary lighting grant program, with the understanding that the town would need to cover approximately $15,000 of the estimated $25,000 cost. The town will also use its budget to purchase necessary signs separately.
School Street Speed and Intersection Safety Concerns Addressed
The board discussed concerns regarding speed on School Street and the intersection at Route 30. Judy Lake reported a near-miss due to speeding on School Street and requested a radar speed sign on Route 30. The board also reviewed the dangerous intersection at Route 30 and discussed the placement of concrete barriers that may be hindering visibility and safety. A motion was made and seconded to have Rutland Regional Planning Commission conduct speed studies on Route 153 by the school, traffic studies at the School Street intersection, the north Dami pilot road intersection, and other segments if identified. The state will conduct a separate traffic study on Route 30 at the intersection.
Select Board Adopts Rules of Procedure, Emphasizes Efficient Meeting Conduct
The select board reviewed and adopted its rules of procedure, emphasizing that while meetings are public, their purpose is for the board to conduct town business efficiently. They outlined rules for public comment, including a two-minute limit per person per topic, and directed all comments to the chair. The rules are available for public review in the town hall. The board also welcomed new members and outlined agenda additions, including a request from Gibb and friends and an update on the Municipal Energy Resilient Program grant.
Town Approves Warrants Totaling Over $6.4 Million; Budget Projections Recommended
The Town Treasurer presented two warrants for approval: payroll for $1,057,749 (including 6 hours of overtime per employee) and accounts payable for $5,426,525. She also provided figures for the general fund ($3,468,048) and highway fund ($2,349,519), and wastewater ($666,707). Given the fiscal year end, a discussion on budget projections was recommended to ensure funds last until the end of the year.
