Ramsey Introduces Ordinance to Control Invasive Plants, Addresses Resident Concerns Over Bamboo
The council introduced Ordinance 14-2026, which amends chapter 3 of the borough code to establish regulations for the control of invasive plants, specifically targeting plants like bamboo on properties within the borough. This ordinance will undergo final passage and adoption at the July 22, 2026 meeting. A resident, Raymond DeMeglio, voiced concerns during public comment about bamboo encroaching from his neighbor's property and inquired about recourse for removal costs and responsibility if the neighbor moves.
Best Western's Liquor License Suspended for 16-17 Months Following Settlement; Future Violations to Cause Revocation
The council discussed the settlement agreement regarding the liquor license for Ramzi Litman LLC, trading as Best Western. The settlement addresses violations from February 2020. As a result, the establishment will be suspended until at least September 1, 2026, effectively suspending operations for 16-17 months. Further state inspections are required for them to operate, likely pushing the reopening to October. Restrictions on the license will remain, and any future violations will lead to immediate license revocation. Mary Ann Carey, a resident, raised concerns about the establishment's history of problems and the current operator status.
Ramsey Library and Recreation Programs Offer Summer Events, Dementia-Friendly Initiative Launched
Councilwoman Gotwetter provided reports on the library and recreation commission. The library is hosting numerous events throughout the summer for the country's 250th anniversary, including history presentations, genealogy workshops, and concerts for adults and children. The library is also partnering with county services and the Alzheimer's Association to become a dementia-friendly library. The recreation commission's summer day camp has begun, adult softball leagues are ongoing, and the farmers market is open with special events planned for the nation's anniversary.
New Grand Trustee Sworn In to Ramsey Council
The council held a swearing-in ceremony for a new Grand Trustee. The new trustee took an oath to faithfully and impartially discharge their duties and support the Constitution of the state of New Jersey and the government of the United States.
Ramsey Emergency Services Building Project Nears Finalization; Appointments Made to Recreation and Zoning Boards
Councilwoman Kilduff reported on the ongoing progress of the Emergency Services Building complex. The building committee and borough officials are working to finalize the design within budget parameters, with plans to go out for bids this summer and showcase final drawings at a future meeting. She also congratulated Irene Chung and Kathy Dainy on their appointments to the Ramsey Recreation Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment, respectively.
