Environmental Commission Updates on Recycling Efforts and Tree Management Initiatives
The Environmental Commission, with support from Public Works and Boy Scout Troop 108, conducted a successful styrofoam collection event on May 16th. The commission has started tracking tree removals and plantings, noting a net loss of 127 trees in Q4 2025. Updates to the urban community forestry plan have been submitted, and revisions to the tree ordinance, including the replacement fee, are being worked on with the planning board's attorney and will be presented to the council for a vote.

Councilman Camp echoed the Mayor's thanks to emergency workers and expressed sympathy for the family affected by a recent fire. The Planning Board approved a use variance for 276-282 Broadway to allow the construction of three townhomes on a commercially zoned lot, deeming it a more favorable community utilization. Additionally, a variance was approved to add residential apartments above existing retail stores at Hillsdale Ave and Winkler Way. This mixed-use project includes adding three two-bedroom apartments, adjusting parking, and relocating a propane station. Variances related to height for decorative roofing and a clock tower were modified, with the tower replaced by a steeple. The plan for an overhang extending over the sidewalk requires separate approval from the Mayor and Council.
