06-23-2026 Council Regular Meeting
Published: Jun 23, 2026
Redevelopment on Harrison Ave Underway; Tax Implications Discussed
The demolition of houses on Harrison Avenue has begun as part of the redevelopment project. While the demolition is a pre-construction phase, regular property taxes will continue to be collected. A slight decrease in tax revenue is expected next year due to the removal of structures from the tax roll, but the value of these improvements was not significant. The total property tax collected from the four or five affected properties is approximately $60,000. The council discussed potential adjustments to tax revenue related to the removal of structures and the timing of demolition relative to finalized development agreements.
Public Safety Activities and Response to Vandalism Highlighted
The Fire Department responded to 15 incidents, and the Chief is involved with the World Cup Fire Protection Task Force. The Police Department has been busy with DUIs, MVAs, domestic disputes, juvenile incidents, and serving warrants. The WALVAC (Waldwick Volunteer Assistance League) volunteers were present at the junior PD event and high school graduation, and are planning to cover the Wycoph fireworks. The town is addressing the recent vandalism of a pride flag, with the mayor, police, and DPW acting quickly to replace it. Residents' positive reaction and media coverage (NBC News) are noted, emphasizing the town's rejection of such behavior. The high school also has a pride flag on a flagpole, and discussions are underway with the Board of Education to maintain and potentially upgrade it, signifying the town's commitment to being a welcoming and accepting place.
Borough Pursues Over $2.3 Million in Grants for Multiple Projects
The borough has received approval for a $700,000 matching grant for the 197 Whitehawth Avenue property purchase, pending final congressional approval. Additionally, the borough is seeking $1.2 million in appropriations from Senators Gottheimer and Booker. A total of $2.3 million in grant applications have been submitted for various projects including the Erie Railroad Station, Borough Park and Pool Paving, Veterans Park and Basketball Path, and Zazzetti Street improvements. Other pending grants include funding for the Hopper Avenue sidewalk and West Prospect Street resurfacing and pedestrian safety.
Waldwick Council Meeting Covers Budget, Grants, Contracts, and Ordinance Introduction
The meeting began with roll call and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer. Updates were provided on the municipal budget, pending grants, and upcoming contract renewals. Committee reports were given by the chairs of Finance, Fire Police Protection, Public Safety, Recreation Health, Public Works, and Grants. The Administrator provided updates on paving projects and the Harrison Avenue redevelopment. The Borough Clerk handled liquor license renewals and pool pass information. Consent resolutions and policy votes were passed, including approvals for pavilion use, a shared service agreement with Bergen County for snowplow and salting services, inclusion in the Bergen County Community Development Program, an agreement to supersede a cooperative agreement for the Community Development Program, the execution of a collective bargaining agreement with the Waldwick PBA, and the award of a contract for a cat loader and snowplow attachment. Waldwick Borough Council Discusses Budget Status, Grants, and Upcoming Expenditures
The Finance Committee provided an update on the municipal budget, noting that approximately 35% of the water budget and 47% of the municipal budget has been expended, putting the borough in good financial standing halfway through the year. An overage in snow removal costs is anticipated due to heavy snowfall last winter, which will be covered by funds from the Snow Trust account, depleting it but maintaining the current year's budget. Several grant applications totaling $2.3 million have been submitted for various projects including the Whitehawth Avenue property, Erie Railroad Station, Borough Park and Pool Paving, Veterans Park and Basketball Path, and Zazzetti Street improvements. A $700,000 matching grant for the Whitehawth Avenue property purchase is pending final congressional approval. Other pending grants include those for the Hopper Avenue sidewalk and West Prospect Street resurfacing. The council also discussed an upcoming PBA contract approval and the purchase of a cat loader and snowplow attachment as part of the 2026 capital budget. The garbage collection contract with GATA is secured through 2027.
