Safe City Nights Series Launching to Foster Community Engagement
City Manager Damal announced the 'Safe City Nights' series, designed for fun and community building, bringing together various city departments (Police, Fire, Parks & Recreation), local businesses, and organizations. The first event is June 24th at Queens Park, followed by one on July 15th at Romky Park. These events will feature activities for all ages, including free pizza, drinks, ice cream, a bike rodeo, bouncy houses, public safety vehicle tours, helicopter landings, a coloring contest, bike repair, and door prizes, with Shields donating a bicycle. The ribbon cutting celebration for Romky Park is scheduled for June 29th at noon.
City Council Honors UCC for Homeless Outreach and VFW for Youth Support
The Morehead City Council recognized the First Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) for their significant contributions to the homeless community. The church donates food from its community garden, collaborates with service providers, and offers fellowship, acting as a 'beacon of hope.' Their food cart is filled daily and relies on donations and church member contributions. They also partner with the Great Plains Food Bank and provide food to the local shelter. The council also acknowledged the VFW for their support of youth initiatives in Morehead. The VFW's donation to Matson Field funded upgrades, including the naming of the home team's third base dugout. Their consistent support for community activities was also highlighted, emphasizing their investment in youth, parks, and the city's future. The VFW representatives stated their community service activities are central to their existence.
Transportation Task Force Meets; Downtown Fargo Transit Center Likely Total Loss
Council Member White reported on attending an ad hoc transportation task force meeting focused on improving collaboration on public transit and addressing regional transportation needs, including expanding services with Matt Bus and reaching rural areas. She also provided an update on the MAP bus meeting, noting that the Ground Transit Center (GTC) in downtown Fargo is likely a total loss due to structural integrity issues, and planning for its future is beginning. Other activities included attending the Morehead Global Market, supporting local entrepreneurs, and attending the Churches United community picnic.
City Council Receives Clean Audit and 2025 Financial Report
The city council received and filed the 2025 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and the annual audit, which was completed by ID Bailey. The audit resulted in a clean, unmodified opinion on the financial statements and the single audit for federal awards. The city's financial position is described as stable and adequate, with a strong fund balance that provides a cushion for unexpected events. Key financial highlights include revenues exceeding expenditures in the general fund, positive net income in utility funds (electric, water, wastewater, stormwater), and healthy cash reserves across enterprise funds. The report also detailed the breakdown of fund balance categories (non-spendable, restricted, committed, assigned, unassigned) and confirmed the city's adherence to its fund balance policy. Council members expressed pride in the finance department's work and the city's sound fiscal stewardship, especially in the current economic climate.
Updates on Pollinator Week, Community Projects, and County Fair
Council Member Nissmeer provided updates on Pollinator Week and related events. Flutterfest is scheduled for Tuesday at MB Johnson Park, featuring activities, tours, and free 'Buckets of Doom' (natural mosquito inhibitors). Doug Talmé will present 'Nature's Best Hope' at MSUM as part of Pollinator Week. The University of Minnesota Extension Committee announced pumpkin as the community plant for the year, with free seeds available at the library and Family Resource Center, and a giant pumpkin growing contest underway. The Klay County Fair is scheduled for July 9th-12th, with volunteer opportunities available. The Cass Clay Food Commission will highlight the City of Morehead on September 9th, focusing on local food systems.
