City Council Approves Designated EV Charging Parking Spots

The council discussed an ordinance to create designated parking areas for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Three EV charging stations have been installed using grant dollars, located in the AL Cooper parking lot, at the corner of Calhoun and Campbell Street, and at the City Transit Center. Each station has two cables, requiring two parking spots. Signs will be placed to designate these spots for EV charging only, and the ordinance will allow for ticketing. The city is not planning to charge for EV charger use at this time, prioritizing encouraging adoption, though this could be reconsidered later. The ordinance will proceed to a second reading and final action in July.

City Council Updates Alcoholic Beverage Regulations and Adds New Event License

The council discussed an ordinance amending the municipal code pertaining to alcoholic beverages. The ordinance revises citizenship requirements to allow license holders and resident managers to be US citizens or legally authorized to work in the US, aligning with state liquor code which does not mandate citizenship. Additionally, a new supplementary license, Class EV, will be added, enabling Class D license holders to host events in a separate space on the same premises, functioning as a private club. This ordinance will proceed to a second reading and final action in July.
