Wyland Public Art Installation Unveiled, Bringing National Attention and Community Enrichment to Gulf Shores
Angela Chafins spoke to the council about the recent unveiling of a new public art installation by marine artist and conservationist Wyland on the side of the Surf Style building. The artwork is described as a stunning new landmark. The unveiling weekend included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a VIP reception, and a public meet-and-greet that drew hundreds of residents and visitors. Chafins expressed gratitude to the city for its support and noted that the artwork has already become a focal point of joy and color. The project generated significant media coverage across the country, shining a national spotlight on Gulf Shores. New Gulf Shores High School Opens, Hosts Educational Conferences and Prepares for Community Tours
Dr. Dyken provided an update on the new high school, which is now open, although still being furnished. The school recently hosted the Alabama Association of School Boards conference and the Superintendent Association conference, impressing visiting superintendents and board members. State Superintendent Dr. Mackey also toured the facility. A community ribbon-cutting and tours are anticipated in early August. The middle school is now occupying the old high school building, and the elementary school has moved into the former middle school. Significant work remains to fully prepare existing middle school facilities, but progress is being made.
Pedestrian Bridge Decorative Lighting Approved for $408,940
The council approved a change order for Harrison Construction regarding decorative lighting for the pedestrian bridge. The change order is for $408,940 and includes the design, furnishing, and installation of the lighting package. This system will allow for illumination of the towers and bridge in various colors and displays, with options for future integration and remote control. The system comes pre-programmed with 30 color combinations and can be programmed further. The lighting is intended to highlight the bridge as an iconic structure. Resolution 7153, authorizing the mayor to execute this change order, was adopted.
