Commission Considers Good Medicine Housing Development, Sets Public Hearing Amid Resident Concerns
The City Commission heard public comment on Ordinance 3284, which would establish a Planned Unit Development (PUD) zoning for the Good Medicine housing development proposed by the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana. The proposed development includes 115 residential units, open space, and community uses on approximately 18.4 acres west of Valley View and south of the Wilcox subdivision. Several residents expressed concerns regarding increased traffic, potential tax base impacts if the land becomes a government trust, lack of sidewalks, and road access. The commission voted to accept the ordinance on first reading and set a public hearing for July 21, 2026.
Great Falls Fire Rescue to Acquire New Live-Fire Training Facility
The City Commission approved the purchase of a WHP MODEX modular custom X-Series fire training simulator for the Great Falls Fire Rescue Department. The purchase was made through Sourcewell, a governmental purchasing cooperative, to leverage specialized expertise and competitive bidding. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance firefighter training, improve operational readiness, and serve the department for 50-75 years. The total cost of the project is $1,300,945.02.
Great Falls Adopts Land Use Public Participation Plan
The City Commission adopted Resolution 10629, formally adopting the city's Land Use Public Participation Plan. This plan formalizes the engagement approach used throughout the growth policy update process and establishes a framework for future MLUPA-related planning actions. Director Cherry highlighted that the plan dictates future public engagement protocols, procedures, and strategies. The plan was developed in conjunction with the growth policy update.
Great Falls Adopts Future Great Falls 2045 Growth Policy and Land Use Plan
The City Commission adopted Resolution 10631, formally adopting the Future Great Falls 2045 Land Use Plan and Growth Policy, including the future land use map. This plan updates the city's long-range land use framework to comply with the Montana Land Use Planning Act (MLUPA) and will guide future decisions on land use, infrastructure, housing, and economic development. The plan emphasizes early and meaningful public engagement. The commission also discussed incorporating a recommendation from Northwestern Energy regarding energy infrastructure coordination and authorized staff to make minor, non-substantive edits.
Great Falls Enforces New Fireworks Restrictions for July 4th
The City Commission was reminded about new fireworks regulations for the upcoming July 4th holiday. The new ordinance restricts fireworks discharge to July 2nd-4th, between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. Importantly, any fireworks that leave the ground are now illegal, with only sparklers, fountains, and ground spinners permitted. Enforcement will involve joint efforts by fire and police departments, with escalating fines for offenses: $100 for the first offense and $1,000 for the fourth.
