The Commission was urged to prioritize core services and consider the sustainability of certain operations, such as the Muni's Restaurant. Next steps include finalizing certified values, setting mill levies, and adopting the final budget in August.
Mount Helena Fire Contained; Fuel Mitigation Efforts Credited
City Manager Lake reported that a fire on Mount Helena was 100% contained with no injuries reported. Fuel mitigation work by the open lands team played a significant role in the quick containment. The response involved the City of Helena Fire Department, DNRC, Forest Service, and other partners. The fire is currently under investigation.
Mayor Praises Governor's Cup Economic Impact on Downtown Helena
During the City Commission meeting, Mayor Dean commented on the positive economic impact of the Governor's Cup event, noting increased activity downtown and increased foot traffic for local businesses. He expressed gratitude to volunteers and participants, highlighting the community and state coming together for the event.
Cook Street Right-of-Way Vacated Between School Blocks for District Development
The City Commission approved a resolution to grant a petition to vacate the Cook Street right-of-way between high school blocks one and two. This allows the school district to combine the vacated street segment with their adjacent properties for future development. The vacation was granted with standard conditions and no public objections were raised.
City Awards Bids for Multiple Water Infrastructure Projects Totaling Over $1.9 Million
The City Commission awarded bids for several water infrastructure projects. The Helena Water Meter Replacement Project (25-25) was awarded to DB Utilities for $797,782. The Butte and Missoula Avenue water main replacements (25-06) were awarded to Montana Materials and Construction for $595,569. The Walnut Street Airport Road water main replacement (25-07) was also awarded to Montana Materials and Construction for $287,569. Finally, the 2026 Fire Hydrant Replacement Project (25-13) was awarded to Premier Utility Solutions for $288,677. All bid awards were approved unanimously.
