Garfield Approves $250,000 for Water Main Improvements

Garfield Allocates $25,000 for Firehouse Improvements and Equipment
Ordinance 3154, a capital ordinance appropriating $25,000 from General Capital Reserves for firehouse improvements and equipment, was passed on final reading. This measure is necessary for the city to comply with fire prevention laws, specifically regarding the installation of suppression systems. The ordinance was previously introduced and passed on June 9, 2026, following a public hearing.
Garfield Tables Zoning Board Alternate Reassignment; Council Debates Board Appointments
During the consent agenda, Councilmember Raymond requested to table Resolution R-342-26 concerning the reassignment of Zoning Board of Adjustment alternate members for further discussion. This motion passed, tabling the reassignment of alternates. Mayor Garnto then made a motion to move Daniela Maricello from first alternate to a permanent seat on the board. Garfield Honors John 'Tree Man' Geyer for Environmental Stewardship
The Mayor and Council recognized and honored John Geyer, also known as "Tree Man," for his dedication to environmental stewardship, community service, and the promotion of tree planting and conservation. Councilmembers expressed appreciation for his efforts to make Garfield greener for future generations. A motion was made and seconded to honor him, passing unanimously. The Mayor and Council extended sincere appreciation for his efforts.
Garfield Amends 2026 Budget Following State Review; PILOT Funding Shifted
The Mayor and Council introduced Resolution R-310-26, which introduces amendments to the 2026 Municipal Budget. A public hearing on the introduced budget from May 19, 2026, was held. The amendments, which resulted from the state declining the initial budget submission due to 35 errors, involve shifting funding for PILOT (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes) payments between properties (99 Passaic Street and 848 River Drive) without increasing the total amount. The state's review process has become more thorough, leading to detailed comments and a later return of the budget review.
