Greektown Festival Petition Sparks Debate Over Scope and Construction Delays

The Greektown Neighborhood Partnership submitted a petition to hold "Monroe Street Weekends" on Monroe Street in Greektown. The event is scheduled to take place on July 10th, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., with setup beginning at 6 p.m. on the same day. The teardown will be completed by 11 p.m. on October 3rd, 2026. The proposed event area is specifically on Monroe Street between Beaubien and St. Antoine. Council members expressed concerns regarding the limited scope of the festival, which only encompasses one block of Greektown, while adjacent blocks are undergoing construction and remain inaccessible. There were also questions about why the festival is proceeding when businesses on other blocks are struggling and the streetscape project is delayed, with potential completion in 2027. The issue was deferred for one week to allow for further discussion and information gathering from the Greektown Association and DEGC regarding the phasing of construction and inclusion of all businesses.

Brewer Park to Receive $300,000 Donation for Elevated Walkway and Outdoor Classroom

The Canfield Consortium has awarded the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department a donation valued at $300,000 for the construction of an elevated walkway, various trees, and an outdoor classroom in Brewer Park. The elevated walkway will be approximately 10 feet high at its highest point, six feet wide, and feature 42-inch guardrails. It will form a loop around a new open green space designed for performing arts or as an open-air classroom, allowing visitors to experience the tree canopy. The Parks Department confirmed that their park development unit will handle inspections and safety checks, treating it like any other city park installation. The liability and safety concerns were addressed, clarifying it is a solid wooden walkway, not a rope bridge, and will undergo regular inspections for wear and tear.

The motion to bring the item back in one week was approved.
