Cranford Clarifies Stance on Kenilworth AI Data Center and Addresses Public Concerns
The Township Committee addressed concerns and misinformation regarding an AI data center proposed in Kenilworth, clarifying Cranford's notification process and its own legislative actions. They emphasized that Cranford was not directly notified of the Kenilworth planning board's decision, as such notifications are not standard unless a project is within 200 feet of municipal property. The committee also highlighted that Cranford has moved forward with its own ordinance amendment to prohibit AI data centers, with a vote scheduled for July 7th. They refuted claims made by Mr. Will Thilley regarding township knowledge and attorney conduct, stating that Thilley's lawsuit was dismissed and is under appeal. The committee also addressed general concerns about AI data centers, acknowledging potential environmental and energy usage issues.
Summer Recreation Programs and Events Announced, Safety Reminders Issued
Commissioner Curran reported on various summer recreation opportunities, including playground programs, fireworks on July 2nd, and the JC's Firecracker 4 Miler and canoe races on July 4th. Cranford West, a lakefront property for camping, was set to open in early July. The report detailed numerous programs for children and seniors available through the Cranford Recreation website and the Orange Avenue Pool, including swimming lessons and adult exercise classes. Updates were also provided on Float Night starting July 3rd. Commissioner Curran also reminded residents to exercise caution while driving due to school being out and highlighted the ongoing need for public awareness regarding community events and safety.
Cranford Library Children's Room Renovation Nearing Completion, Set to Double in Size
Susan Burke, President of the Cranford Library Board of Trustees, thanked the Township Committee, specifically Commissioner Andrews, and State Senator Nick Scutari and Assemblywoman Carter for their support of the children's room renovation. She also thanked the library director, staff, trustees, and past presidents, including Patricia Pavlak. The children's room has been closed for over a year, with services temporarily housed at the community center thanks to Director Robertazzi. Upon completion, the room will double in size, offering more space for children of all ages and abilities. Burke highlighted this project as an example of local government investing in infrastructure and expressed anticipation for the reopening this summer, pending furniture delivery.
Township Committee Approves Infrastructure Projects, Grant Funding, and Personnel Appointment
The finance report highlighted several key agenda items. A contract was awarded for ADA ramp upgrades on Lexington Avenue to Mesoricola, noted for being a reputable local company and offering a competitive bid. Improvements at Cranford West, previously approved in the capital budget, are moving forward after contractor procurement challenges. The committee processed grant adjustments, including reallocation of funds and adding revenue for a distracted driving initiative, and authorized the submission of the annual Kids Recreation Trust Fund grant. Routine liquor license renewals were noted for generating revenue, and a hazard mitigation plan was adopted to ensure eligibility for FEMA funding. Additionally, Jennifer Burns was appointed as Executive Secretary for the Fire Department.
Township Committee Issues Proclamations for First Presbyterian Church Anniversary and Juneteenth
The meeting featured proclamations recognizing the 175th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford and acknowledging Juneteenth. The First Presbyterian Church was honored for its long history of service, spiritual, educational, and civic contributions, and its recent sanctuary restoration. Juneteenth was proclaimed to honor the end of slavery and to acknowledge the ongoing fight for equal rights, with Cranford committed to fostering an inclusive community. Mayor Miller-Prunty read the proclamations and extended appreciation for the church's contributions and Cranford's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
