High School Junior Launches 'Seniors Bridge to AI' Initiative in Scotch Plains
Manav Shah, a junior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, presented his initiative 'Seniors Bridge to AI,' a free AI literacy workshop program for seniors. The program aims to educate seniors about AI basics, including its applications in hobbies, health, scam detection, and everyday communication. Shah has developed a curriculum, a mobile web app, and social media tutorials. The initiative has reached over 100 seniors across Union County, with six workshops held and ten more scheduled. He seeks community support to spread the word.
Scotch Plains Proclaims Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month
The Scotch Plains Town Council proclaimed May 15th to June 15th, 2026, as Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month. The proclamation highlighted that Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder affecting approximately 1 in 50 children and adolescents, characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations (tics). It emphasized the challenges faced by individuals with Tourette Syndrome, including social stigma and misunderstanding, and the importance of education, inclusivity, and acceptance. The proclamation recognized the efforts of the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome (NJCTS) and encouraged residents to educate themselves and support affected individuals.
Scotch Plains Council Introduces Ordinances on Food Permits, Police Fees, and Affordable Housing
The Town Council introduced three ordinances for first reading and public hearing. Ordinance 2026-21 amends Chapter 17 (Fire Prevention) to update permits and fees for mobile and temporary food preparation. Ordinance 2026-22 amends Section 2-25 (Fees for Service) related to police services. Ordinance 2026-23 amends Article 19-7 (Affordable Housing) to address requirements of the Fair Housing Act and Uniform Housing Affordability Controls, aligning with the township's consent order for affordable housing obligations. Public hearings for these ordinances are scheduled for July 7th, 2026.
Scotch Plains Introduces Ordinances for Traffic Control, Secondary Buildings, and Golf Course Fees
The Township Council introduced three ordinances for first reading. Ordinance 2026-24 proposes amending Chapter 7A (Traffic Schedules) to include a crossing guard post traffic control on Willow Avenue. Ordinance 2026-25 amends Chapter 23 (Zoning) by replacing Attachment 4 with new regulations for detached secondary buildings in residential districts concerning yard and building height limitations. Ordinance 2026-26 amends Chapter 10 (Parks and Golf Course) to adjust fees for the Shady Rest Golf Course. Public hearings for all three ordinances are scheduled for July 7th, 2026.
Scotch Plains Council Highlights Upcoming Community Events and Recycling Incentives
The Township Council announced upcoming community events, including the Rev 250 celebration on June 26th, featuring a parade, time capsule opening, and festivities, followed by the annual Independence fireworks on June 27th. The summer concert series begins July 9th, and 'Play in the Park' for Disability Pride Month and Parks and Recreation Month is scheduled for July 15th. The Manager's report also highlighted pool safety tips, summer paving programs, and information about a World Cup event parking. Additionally, a limited-time incentive program for recycling large appliances through PSE&G was announced, offering rebates until June 30th.
