City Introduces Bond Ordinance for Firefighting Equipment Acquisition
A bond ordinance (70-45) was introduced for the acquisition of firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the fire department. The ordinance seeks to authorize the issuance of $78,375 in bonds or notes to finance part of the appropriation for this equipment.
City Council Adopts 2026 Municipal and SID Budgets, Showing a Decrease in Property Taxes
The city council reviewed and adopted the 2026 Municipal Budget and the 2026 Special Improvement District (SID) budget. The municipal budget for 2026 totals $71,831,819.62 for municipal purposes and $3,758,756.86 for the minimum library tax. This budget represents a decrease of $1.24 annually or $0.10 monthly for the average assessed home value of $134,172, which includes a state-mandated increase of $21.81 for the library portion of the tax rate. Councilwoman Orman thanked department heads for their diligence in reducing budgets. Approval was also requested and granted for financial actions including payment of bills and May investment reports.
Park Improvements, Rules, and Maintenance Initiatives Highlighted
Councilman Armstead discussed park improvements and thanked the DPW for their work. He also noted that dogs are not allowed in city parks, directing residents to designated dog parks and reminding them that city parks close at 9:00 PM. Councilwoman Lot mentioned the city's sidewalk and pothole initiative and encouraged residents to report areas needing attention. Mayor Armstead discussed the city's commitment to maintaining its parks and ensuring safety.
Personnel Changes and Procurement Approved Across City Departments
The city council reviewed personnel reports, approving various appointments, promotions, and resignations across different departments. Key actions included promoting Taji Braxton to Fire Lieutenant, approving the resignation of Stephanie Kabala from the police department to become a police officer, approving resignations in the Department of Community Services (Darian Bettis and Robert Thieling), appointing Ara Hussein as a student assistant in the Division of Engineering, and appointing Kyle Edmonds as a part-time housing inspector. The council also approved seasonal lists for the Recreation Department and appointed Alan Roth as the ADA 504 coordinator. Additionally, bond ordinances were introduced for the acquisition of automated license plate recognition cameras for the police department and for firefighting equipment for the fire department.
Sixth Ward Report: Infrastructure Repairs, Commercial Lot Maintenance, and Development Updates
Councilman Delgado reported on various issues in the sixth ward, including the maintenance of commercial lots, the repair of a guardrail on Morris Avenue, and pothole repairs. He noted that the vast majority of potholes have been addressed. He also mentioned two large potholes on Route 1 and 9 (state jurisdiction) and depressions on East 13th and 12th Streets. Regarding the self-storage unit project on Smith Street and Hampton, he confirmed working with the contractor to ensure a privacy fence is installed. He thanked the traffic and public works departments for their assistance.
