Derek Weathers Declared Mayor After Official Election Canvas
The City Council conducted the official canvas of the runoff election held on June 13th. Derek Weathers was officially declared the winner of the mayoral race, receiving 1,107 votes compared to Blake Jones's 599 votes. The canvassing committee, comprised of Mr. Cosby and Mr. Jones, reviewed the returns. A minor adding error in the unofficial tally was explained and accepted by the council.
Specific Use Permit Granted for Contractor Yard with Paving and Dust Control Conditions
The council considered a request for a Specific Use Permit (SUP) for a contractor shop and storage yard for W-5 Construction on approximately 1.4 acres zoned Regional Commercial District at 1519 West Kilpatrick Avenue. The existing site has an office building and yard. The applicant proposed expanding the gravel surface storage yard and paving the front parking area. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval with two conditions: paving the front parking and compacting/maintaining the gravel storage yard for dust control. The council approved the SUP with these conditions.
Rezoning Approved for North Main Street Property for Commercial/Industrial Flex Use
The City Council considered an ordinance to rezone approximately 10 acres located on the west side of North Main Street from Industrial District to Commercial Industrial Flex District. The applicant intends to develop the property with a multi-tenant office and warehouse development. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval, and the council approved the rezoning request.
City Council Denies Rezoning for Duplex Construction on Williams Avenue
The City Council voted to deny a rezoning request for approximately 0.25 acres at 1103 Williams Avenue, which sought to change the zoning from single-family dwelling (SF7) to duplex dwelling district. The property currently has a single-family home in poor condition, and the applicant wished to build a new duplex. Although the lot dimensions could accommodate a duplex, the future land use designation is neighborhood conservation, and the Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended denial. Council members expressed concerns about maintaining consistency in zoning and density.
