Roadway Construction and Traffic Signal Approved for Faraday Street Corridor
The Alcoa Board of Commissioners approved bids for roadway construction to connect Faraday Street to Marconi Boulevard and for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Faraday Street and Tesla Boulevard. The board voted unanimously to approve this item.
Alcoa Adopts Safety Action Plan to Secure Federal Grant
The Alcoa Board of Commissioners adopted the City of Alcoa Safety Action Plan and its safety targets, PC Resolution 2026-16. This plan is a requirement to submit for a federal grant of approximately $4 million through the Safe Streets for All program, aimed at improving roadway safety and reducing traffic accidents, fatalities, and pedestrian incidents. The evaluation process included extensive public outreach and data analysis of roadway infrastructure, pedestrian infrastructure, and traffic incident data. While the plan covers all city roads, a significant portion of identified safety issues are on state routes, over which the city has no direct control. A 20% local match is required for the grant funding.
Alcoa Approves Annual Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-2027
The Alcoa Board of Commissioners adopted the annual budget and tax rate for the fiscal year beginning July 1st, 2026, and ending June 30th, 2027. The certified tax rate is expected to be provided within the next two to three weeks, with the first reading scheduled for the June commission meeting. The budget amount will be linked to the certified tax rate provided, ensuring neutrality and preventing significant fluctuations. The current adoption of the budget today accounts for property tax dollars that will be aligned with the final certified rate.
Citizen Questions Timing of Special Call Meeting
During the meeting, a citizen, James Hammontree, expressed dismay that the special call meeting was scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on a Friday, suggesting citizens were not encouraged to attend and noting he was the only citizen present due to his retired status. The commission acknowledged his comment and proceeded with the agenda.
