New Criminal Justice Curriculum Aims to Recruit Local Youth into Public Service
The Police Chief presented a new criminal justice curriculum initiative for 11th-grade students at Albemarle High School. This program, developed in collaboration with the school system and college, aims to recruit local youth into public service by offering college-level criminal justice classes. Students can transition into college classes as seniors and become pre-apprentices, with the state covering their associate's degree. The program, which involves over 15 police officers as instructors, is designed to encourage students to remain in the community for public service roles. The city would incur minimal costs per student per semester, with potential for part-time summer employment. A contractual agreement is being considered to ensure students remain with the city after training.
City Council Approves Budget Adjustments and Project Funding Allocations
The council reviewed and approved a series of budget adjustments and funding allocations recommended after budget work sessions. Key changes include moving code enforcement budgets to the planning department, an increase in debt for solid waste equipment, reallocating funds from security guards to a full-time police officer for City Hall security, and cutting other proposed positions while adding back a Parks and Rec assistant director. Significant funding was allocated for various projects using PFOS funds, including building demolitions, theater upgrades, park improvements, City Hall upgrades, and parking lot projects. Some proposed items, like the 333 PD building renovations and a traffic study, were not approved.
