Yucca Valley Council Approves Lease for BMX Facility Operation

Update Provided on Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan Meeting Schedule
Shane, from staff, provided an update on the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan, noting that the plan is coming before the California Fish and Game Commission on August 12th and 13th. He mentioned that local residents have been involved in public testimony and meeting with legislative representatives. Mayor Abel added that town staff continues to engage with legislative advocates and legislators to seek legislative change and coordinate efforts with various stakeholders, emphasizing that the process is dynamic and ongoing.
Successor Agency Reviews 2026-2030 Budget Focused on Debt Service
The agency reviewed the proposed budget for the successor agency to the former Yucca Valley Redevelopment Agency for fiscal years 2026 through 2030. The agency, established after the dissolution of redevelopment agencies in 2012, is responsible for winding down activities, fulfilling debt obligations, and managing assets. Currently, its primary functions are making debt service payments through 2036 and administering a small allowance for administrative costs to the town. The average annual revenue and expenditure is projected at $620,000.
Resident Expresses Frustration Over Frequent Power Outages, Demands Accountability from Edison
Cheryl Contopoulos voiced concerns about repeated unplanned power outages affecting residents in the Campanella Circuit served by Southern California Edison. She detailed eight outages in the past month and highlighted the disruption to residents who rely on power for remote work, homeschooling, and medical needs. Contopoulos urged the council to hold Edison accountable for addressing these issues, referencing a presentation from five months prior outlining promised upgrades that have not yet materialized, and stated that residents plan to contact state and utility officials.
