Yelm Police Department Responds to Officer-Involved Shooting and Traffic Accident

The police department had a busy weekend, responding to an officer-involved shooting on Thursday where a Yelm officer provided scene security and first aid. On Saturday evening, an officer was injured and a civilian rider was with him when their vehicle was struck by a truck that ran a stop sign. Both were hospitalized but later released and are doing well.

Annexation Updates: New 'Heritage Zone' Proposed for Zone 8, Industrial Rezones Forthcoming

Cody provided an update on annexation processes. Zone 8, previously annexed and zoned R1 to 5 in the county, is being rezoned into a new 'heritage zone' after residents expressed concerns about the former zoning's restrictions. Other industrial properties are slated for rezoning, with discussions planned for July. Zone 8 residents are currently safer under the open space zone than their previous county zoning.

City Approves $20,000 Agreement with Stowe Development and Strategies for Infrastructure Funding and Development Negotiations

The council approved a professional services agreement with Stowe Development and Strategies LLC for $20,000. The firm, led by Bob Stowe, will assist the city in negotiating a development agreement with Lou Bern and exploring options for an incremental taxing district to fund the Southern Loop Boulevard and associated infrastructure. Bob Stowe has extensive experience in leading complex projects and guiding taxing district programs for other cities.

Public Safety Committee Discusses State Legislation, Interlocal Agreements, and SWAT Team Success

The Public Safety Committee met on June 2nd and discussed recent state legislation (SB 6002) regarding tools utilized by agencies, noting that increased inter-agency use improves effectiveness. They also reviewed updates to the CMIIT OII interlocal agreement and the regional SWAT team ILA. The committee commended four local officers serving in leadership roles within the regional SWAT team. Court updates included passport days and upcoming training sessions.
