Westborough Police Department Promotes Corporal, Welcomes New Officers
The Westborough Police Department introduced new officers and promoted an existing officer to Corporal. The new officers are Daniel Farrell, Timothy Goddard, Samuel Hanson, Hannah Lima, and Ian Flora. Nicholas Anthony was promoted to the rank of Corporal after a competitive testing process. The promotion ceremony included a swearing-in by the town clerk and pinning by his wife, Sophie.
Westborough Adopts Decarbonization Roadmap, Seeks Climate Leader Certification
The Select Board approved the municipal decarbonization roadmap and application for the Climate Leader program. This roadmap is a non-binding planning guide to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, focusing on municipal and school buildings. The town has already received $657,000 in funding since becoming a Green Community in 2018. Becoming a Climate Leader community would provide access to further grant opportunities, including a technical support grant and a decarbonization accelerator grant, potentially exceeding $1 million. The roadmap's 'zero over time' approach aligns emission reduction projects with natural capital cycles, triggered by equipment failure, renovations, or scheduled replacements. The School Committee has already approved the roadmap.
Westborough Considers, But Declines Temporary Alcohol Service Hour Expansion
The Select Board discussed an advisory from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission regarding temporary expansion of alcohol service hours and public consumption areas, a pilot program associated with the World Cup. The advisory allows for a one-hour extension of liquor license hours and the designation of public consumption areas. The town has not received any requests for these allowances. Board members noted the pilot program is temporary, running through July 31, 2026, and expressed no current need to adopt changes, suggesting they could evaluate requests individually if they arise.
Select Board Approves Over $130,000 in Interdepartmental Transfers
The Select Board approved several interdepartmental transfers totaling $131,000 to cover expenses across various departments, including police, finance, legal, veteran services, and insurance. These transfers are necessary due to unforeseen circumstances such as new hires, training costs, legal cases, and higher-than-average unemployment insurance expenses. Funds were moved from salary and wages in departments with vacancies or retirements to cover these operational costs within the fiscal year.
Select Board Confirms Annual Appointments to Town Committees and Boards
The Select Board approved several annual appointments and reappointments to various town boards and committees. These included appointments to the Active Transportation and Safety Committee, Recreation Committee, Veterans Advisory Board, Affordable Housing Trust, Economic Development Committee, Treasurer Collector position, Cultural Council, and Youth Commission. The terms for these appointments generally begin July 1, 2026, and extend for multiple years, ensuring continued community governance and service.
