Meadowbrook Country Club Request Tabled; Charity Days Added to Agenda
The council discussed the Meadowbrook Country Club's permission request for connectivity to a boat, and a request for 'Charity Days.' The permission request for the Country Club was tabled until the next council meeting because the liaison was not present and council members had not had time to review it. The 'Charity Days' item was added to the agenda.
City Approves $81,000 Settlement, Paying $8,100
The council approved a settlement reached on Monday, June 22nd, regarding a case involving the municipal league. The total settlement amount was $81,000. The city's portion of the settlement is 10% ($8,100), with the municipal league covering the remaining 90%.
Thompson Avenue Section to be Vacated for New Police and Fire Department Campus
Ordinance 2736 was read for the third and final time, concerning the vacation of a portion of Thompson Avenue between 6th Street and 7th Street. This closure is to facilitate the construction of a new, consolidated building for the West Memphis Police Department and Fire Department, creating a unified campus. The affected area will become green space or parking for the new facility. Construction is slated to begin in July.
Council Members Allocate Charity Funds to Local Organizations
During the 'Charity Days' discussion, multiple council members and the Mayor allocated funds from their charity budgets to various organizations. Allocations included donations to the L.R. Jackson Girls Club, Taste of West Memphis, Wanda City Boys and Girls Club, Creative Strategies Community, and the Crittenden County single parent scholarship program (also referred to as Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Program).
Virtual Attendance Clarified: Not Counted for Quorum Post-COVID Rules
The council discussed quorum requirements and virtual meeting attendance policies. It was clarified that individuals attending virtually are not counted towards quorum once temporary COVID-19 rules allowing virtual attendance for quorum purposes expired. The City Clerk confirmed that Ms. Hutchinson, attending via Zoom, could not be counted for quorum.
