Community Events, Public Works Updates, and Legal Counsel Reappointment Announced
Various community events and programs were announced. The city congratulated five Dizzy Dean State All-Star tournament teams, with one team, the 7U, winning first place in the Senatobia tournament. A Juneteenth celebration was scheduled for the upcoming weekend at Latimer Park. The city fireworks display was announced for Thursday, July 2nd, at Latimer Lakes Park. A teddy bear picnic was scheduled for Friday, July 10th, at Latimer Lakes Park. The library announced its 'Wet 'n Wild' events with Greg Maxey every Wednesday. A 'Field Day Friday' was mentioned but not confirmed. The Public Works department is nearing completion of the preliminary pavement plan review and is working on the Dunbarton drainage project and the Horn Lake EWP project for erosion prevention. An adoption event for dogs was scheduled at Olive Branch Southaven on Saturday. Attorney Revonda L. Griffin expressed gratitude for being trusted with the city's legal affairs for another year and welcomed the new Fire Chief.
Horn Lake Board Approves Claims, Appoints New Fire Chief, Honors Retiring Staff
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen reviewed and approved various items including the municipal docket, minutes from a previous meeting, and the consent agenda with noted exceptions. They also approved the claims docket, totaling $1,607,076.67 across several funds. A special presentation was made to Daffy Darby, a retiring receptionist and former dispatcher for the police department, recognizing her 26 years of service. Another presentation honored Connie James, director of Harland Hands Food, for her work in providing food assistance and rehabilitation support. The board also passed a resolution to clean private properties with unmaintained lots and approved an agreement with the municipal attorney, Revonda L. Griffin of Perry Griffin PC, effective July 1st, 2026. Chief Ronald White was appointed as the new Fire Chief at an annual rate of $93,466, effective July 1st, 2026. A committee was formed to review interlocal agreements, led by Alderman Bledsoe. Recognition was given to outgoing Fire Chief Linville for his many years of service. The board entered and exited closed determination sessions and executive sessions, during which a motion was made and passed to accept the resignation of Andrew Hawkins-Smith from the planning department.
