Road Paving Update: Chip Seal Projects Underway, Focus on Pavement Preservation

Alderman Reeves requested an update on road paving projects. The paving contractor is scheduled to return on Thursday to complete fog chip seal work on Egypt Central (from Billy Mayor to past Luther Road) and Oak Road, as well as completing Memphis Arlington (from Highway 70 to the fiveway). A section of Centra will also be completed, and Appling (between Memphis Arlington and Highway 70) will receive a second coat. The process involves a chip seal followed by a period for traffic to run on it before a second layer is applied, which is a temporary inconvenience but improves the road's longevity. This technique is applied to roads rated 'fair' to extend their life before major repaving is needed. The city has a Pavement Management Group and a Transportation Engineer, Becky Bailey, who oversees the paving preservation plan and stays updated on techniques. The current methods align with professional engineering standards and the city's pavement management system, which uses a PCI scale.
