Waukee City Council Meeting June 15, 2026
Published: Jun 15, 2026
Oakleaf Plat 3 Approved for Commercial Development
The council approved the preliminary and final plats for Oakleaf Plat 3. The project, owned by Grand Prairie Partners LLC, involves platting 3.58 acres located east of Grand Prairie Parkway and north of Interstate 80 into two lots for future commercial development. Lot one will be 2.3 acres and Lot two will be 1.27 acres. Access will be provided via a private drive, and internal sidewalks will be included. The property is zoned K-RO (Retail Regional District). Staff recommended approval for both the preliminary and final plats.
Walke Council Advances Ordinance Updating Personal Transportation Device Regulations
The council considered and approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend Chapter 76 of the Walke Municipal Code regarding bicycle regulations, renaming it to 'Personal Transportation Device Regulations'. This update aims to regulate personal transportation devices and will repeal Chapter 77 concerning skateboards. The ordinance was discussed with input from various bicycle advocacy groups, with the Chief of Police explaining the rationale behind the changes, emphasizing safety for all users of public spaces and addressing issues observed with e-motos, electric scooters, and electric bicycles. The ordinance will classify e-motos as high-speed pedestrian conveyances and prohibit their operation on sidewalks, trails, city parks, and green spaces. It also addresses regulations for electric scooters, pedestrian conveyances, skates, and skateboards on streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less. The goal is to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of other devices, providing law enforcement with tools for enforcement. The council acknowledged that while consistency across the metro area is desired, specific city needs and enforcement capabilities will lead to slight differences in ordinances. Education and discretion will be prioritized in enforcement, with a misdemeanor fine of $25 for violations, though the aim is to avoid ticketing. Potential funding opportunities for trail and roadway crossing safety were also mentioned. The council recognized the need for an ordinance to provide enforcement mechanisms for safety on trails and roadways.
Site Plan Approved for Les Schwab Tire Centers
The council approved the site plan for Les Schwab Tire Centers at 3405 Grand Prairie Parkway. The project involves the construction of a single-story building, just under 10,000 square feet and approximately 27 feet in height, on Lot 1 of the Oakleaf Plat 3. The building will be constructed of pre-cast concrete, stone tile, metal, and glazing. Overhead transparent glass doors will face Grand Prairie Parkway. A trash enclosure, monument sign, and two access points from the north private drive are included. Parking and landscaping requirements are met, and the site will be served by public and private utilities with stormwater detention provided by a basin on the east side. Staff recommended approval.
