Zoning Amendment Approved for Commercial Landscape Business
The City Commission approved the second reading of an ordinance to amend the zoning ordinance and map for the property located at 200716 Courier Court Northwest, also known as 6 Courier Court Northwest. This rezoning pertains to 'Mr. Bill's' landscape or lawn and snow removal business. The ordinance was covered in the previous city commission meeting and was approved.
Kyle Picard Appointed to Planning Commission
During the meeting, the City Commission approved the appointment of Kyle Picard to fill an open term on the Planning Commission. Picard is described as an extremely qualified applicant with extensive knowledge and subject matter expertise, currently serving as a project manager at MDOT and a resident of Walker. His appointment is intended to fill a critical gap, ensuring a quorum for upcoming meetings, particularly with a busy July agenda. The application was shared via email shortly before the meeting, and while the mayor expressed reservations about 'walk-on' items, Picard's qualifications made this appointment a 'no-brainer'.
Universal Spiral Air Receives Tax Abatement for Industrial Development
The City Commission approved the establishment of an Industrial Development District and an Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate for Universal Spiral Air, located at 2756 Hillside Drive Northwest. The applicant, David Krupp of Universal Spiral Air and Universal Metal Holdings, stated that the tax abatement is much needed for developing the expensive property and has been working with city engineering staff on stormwater design. The company currently employs 65 people across locations in Detroit and Grand Rapids, and has grown significantly since establishing a presence in Walker in 2012. The business attributes its success to continuous improvement in quality and customer service.
Jake Gardner Appointed Director of Public Works; Consent Agenda Approved
The City Commission approved the consent agenda, which included the appointment of Jake Gardner as the new Director of Public Works, effective July 1st. The commission also thanked Gary Postma for his decades of service to the city. Additionally, the consent agenda covered expenditures totaling $3,222,322.12 and a recommendation for a Digital Marketing Consultant.
Voter Approval Sought for Police and Fire Dedicated Millage on November Ballot
The City Commission discussed and approved Resolution 26-805, which will place a question on the November ballot for voter approval to amend the city charter regarding a dedicated millage for police and fire services. The proposed amendment aims to provide funding for capital and operating expenses for police and fire departments for a period of 10 years. A minor wording change was proposed and conditionally approved, subject to legal review, to clarify that funds are for both capital and operating expenses for police and fire. This initiative stems from the city's evolution, increased growth in industrial and residential areas, and the need to address the capacity of existing facilities.
