Holland City Council Approves 3% Wage Increase for Non-Union Employees for FY2027
The Holland City Council discussed and approved a fiscal year 2027 non-union wage adjustment recommendation. Human Resources presented data from 14 comparable municipalities in Michigan, where wage adjustments ranged from 2% to 5% with an average of 3.12%. The Board of Public Works proposed a 2.8% adjustment for their non-union employees, and data from World at Work indicated an average of 2.9% for the government sector in Michigan. The council approved a 3% increase for all non-union full and part-time year-round employees.

During the public comment period, Keegan Host addressed the council regarding federal government actions impacting food assistance programs, specifically citing cuts to SNAP and WIC programs following the 'Big Beautiful Bill Act.' He criticized tax cuts for the wealthy and the impact on families, particularly children, who are losing food benefits. Martha Capistani Holland spoke about the courage and sacrifice of the founding fathers in relation to the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, emphasizing their commitment to liberty and self-government. Henrikson from Zealand shared a positive experience at an event in Colin Park, highlighting community togetherness, faith expression, and freedom of speech.
Holland Police Department to Upgrade to Axon System for Body Cameras, Digital Evidence
The Holland City Council approved a contract for the Axon system, which includes body cameras, cruiser cameras, tasers, interview room cameras, and a digital evidence system. This decision came after extensive research and comparison with other agencies, many of which in the surrounding counties (Ottawa, Kent, Allegan) have also adopted Axon. The current cruiser cameras are out of warranty, and body cameras and tasers are nearing the end of their support lifecycles. The new system aims to improve digital evidence management and FOIA redaction capabilities. The council specifically opted out of the AI program component of the contract.
