Vernon Township Adopts Ordinance Banning Data Centers
The council discussed and subsequently adopted Ordinance 26-11, which defines and prohibits data centers within the Township of Vernon. This ordinance was introduced to prevent large-scale data center facilities from being established in the township, citing concerns about their significant energy and water consumption, potential strain on infrastructure, noise pollution, and limited job creation, while also ensuring that the ordinance does not hinder improvements to telecommunications and internet services. The adoption of this ordinance comes amid similar actions in other municipalities concerned about the impact of data centers on community character and resources.
Vernon Township Discusses Land Sale Process for Unused Properties
During the meeting, Ordinance 2613, which authorizes the sale of certain land in Vernon Township at public auction, was discussed. Council members sought clarification on the process of inspecting these sites to ensure they are not needed by the township or could be used for other purposes. Internal policies require departmental sign-offs, including the zoning officer and engineer, before properties are sold. The properties are being sold in manageable increments, and a spreadsheet tracks departmental approvals. Residents inquired about receiving a list of sold properties and their prices, and the timeline for the auction process, which is managed by Maxxam after council approval.
Natural Gas Line Upgrade and Resident Concerns Over Internet/Cell Service in Vernon
A resident inquired about the natural gas line installation on Samos Road, asking about the cost to the town and the notification process for residents. It was explained that Elizabeth Town Gas is upgrading the existing pipe from a 4-inch to an 8-inch main, which will eventually feed the schools and provide long-term heating cost savings. The utility company is responsible for the street paving after the work. Another resident raised concerns about poor internet and cell phone service from Optimum and Verizon, noting frequent dropped calls and long wait times for customer service, and questioned if these providers are required to seek council permission to continue services. While there is no current requirement for them to appear before the council, the Board of Education is planning to install a Verizon tower, which may improve cell service.
Vernon Township Council Reviews Bills, Approves Bond Ordinances
During the review of the bills list, several items were discussed. Item 66140 concerning duplicate tax refund entries was questioned for its occurrence and correction. Item 66149 related to plowing for the MUA was clarified as a shared service where the MUA is charged for services rendered. Item 66152 for Positive Promotions, totaling $4,520, was explained as being funded from the opioid settlement fund and used by the police department for community relations supplies for events such as Vernon Day, Junior Police Academy, Safety Town, and holiday events. Additionally, Ordinance 2614 was introduced, a bond ordinance appropriating $5,330,000 for various township improvements, and Ordinance 2615 was introduced, appropriating $281,280 for various improvements. Ordinance 2616 was also introduced, amending the Administrative Code regarding fees and escrows for the zoning and land use board. A bond ordinance for $5.7 million was approved, detailing allocations for equipment, street improvements, police accessories, Conway Dam repair, a ladder truck, and a first responder communication system.
Vernon Township Considers Funding for New Pickleball Courts
The Vernon Township Council discussed the proposal for constructing four pickleball courts, with a projected cost of $250,000, including 15 parking spaces and a resting area. The funding for this project is proposed to come from leftover money allocated from Ordinance 21-12, totaling $48,295.27, which was originally designated for a pump track. Public comments showed strong support for the pickleball courts, with residents highlighting their popularity and the need for such amenities within the town, noting that existing courts in nearby areas are expensive or inaccessible. There were also discussions regarding the source of funds, with clarification that it would not be grant money but rather from existing township funds, and concerns about noise and supervision in park areas were raised. The mayor expressed openness to further discussion, and council approval would be needed for awarding bids.
