Community Members Share Positive Feedback on City Initiatives and Encourage Engagement
Community members provided public comments. Liv Hawkins, representing Strongtown Spartanburg, thanked the council for the East Main Street road diet, which facilitated a community bike ride with 29 participants. She emphasized the goal of providing casual, all-ages rides to encourage biking in the city. Gina Drat, also from Strongtown Spartanburg, shared positive experiences from community events like the Juneteenth celebration and highlighted the importance of community engagement and showing up to make the city better. Amber Fetta was not present to provide comment.
Council Members Highlight Successful Community Events and Economic Development Initiatives
Council members shared updates and positive feedback on recent community events and initiatives. Councilmember Southern highlighted the success of the Juneteenth celebration, noting the large crowds and effective organization by staff. Councilmember Southern also encouraged residents to view the artwork of Michael Nesbitt. Councilmember Motors discussed the positive impact of sports tourism, referencing the BMW tournament and the South Carolina Junior Golf Association event, which brought visitors and positive reviews to Spartanburg's hotels, restaurants, and downtown areas. Liberty Fellowship also held a seminar in Spartanburg, with participants having positive experiences. Councilmember Motors also praised the city's communications team for timely updates regarding Juneteenth events and the Music on Main event. Councilmember Southern promoted the 'Facts First Spartanburg' website as a resource for factual information about the community and highlighted the high school work-based learning program, which placed 651 students and accumulated over 89,000 work hours. A new hotel, Fairfield, has opened. The Juneteenth celebration, particularly the mayor's walk and youth engagement, was praised by multiple council members. A 'Great American Cleanup' is scheduled for July 27th. The upcoming newsletter from one council member was mentioned, reflecting on 18 years of newsletter contributions.
City Council Approves Board and Commission Appointments, Several Vacancies Remain
The City Council reviewed and approved appointments for various boards and commissions. The Airport Advisory Board recommended Lieutenant Bill Strickland, Eric Gray, Robert Snyder, and Chad Buckingham. The Hard Board reappointed Sam Mitchell and Rod McCance. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee reappointed Sam Bachron and appointed Roosevelt Leggett. The Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals reappointed Yuri Namovich. The Design Review Board had two applications but none were qualified as they were not city residents. The Planning Commission recommended appointing Ricky Fields, Reed Cunningham (reappointment), and Will McCusker. The Public Safety Committee recommended David Williams (reappointment), Mike Byers (reappointment), Taylor Cash (reappointment), and Russ Rudolph (new appointment). The Board of Zoning Appeals appointed Axel Wagner. Several seats remain open on multiple boards including the Housing Board of Adjustments and Appeals, Design Review Board, and Construction Board.
