City Council Approves 2027 Budget Goals and Objectives

The City Council discussed and approved the goals and objectives for the 2027 budget. Finance Director Jason Hanneman presented the proposed goals, which carry forward adopted 2026 objectives focusing on high-quality services, maintaining streets, parks, and infrastructure, strong financial condition, and financial transparency. Specific points included planning for a compensation market study in 2027, continued funding for the municipal complex project, maintaining a 25% fund balance, and a cautious approach to the 2027 budget due to uncertainties regarding the state legislature and public safety sales tax. The council also heard about mill levy information, with Prairie Village property taxes comprising 16% of the total, and a note that the state's 1.3% levy will be removed next year. A quarter mill reduction equates to approximately $180,000. Decision packages for new programs or service reductions are due by April 10th. The council ultimately approved the 2027 goals and objectives unanimously.
