Pleasanton Appoints Interim City Manager, Begins Search for Permanent Replacement
Pleasanton is seeking a new City Manager following the departure of Jerry Bowden, who has moved to the City of Alameda. The city has appointed Joe Calabrigo as interim City Manager, bringing 30 years of experience, including 20-25 years as Town Manager of Danville. Calabrigo's extensive experience, steady leadership, and understanding of local government made him the preferred choice. He began his interim role on June 8th. For the permanent position, the city has contracted Bob Murray and Associates, a nationally recognized executive recruitment firm, to conduct a nationwide search, which is expected to take four to six months. The recruitment process aims to find a candidate with experience, leadership skills, and a vision for Pleasanton's future. The city council will receive candidates from the firm and make a final decision. The city is also managing infrastructure projects related to water and sewer systems, some of which were built in the 1950s-1970s.
Public Art Installation 'Maestro' Unveiled at Duki Park Honoring Don Lewis
The Duki Park, located in Pleasanton, celebrated the unveiling of the Don Lewis harmonic symphony, a public art installation honoring the pioneering musician, inventor, educator, and longtime Pleasanton resident, Don Lewis. The interactive installation, named 'Maestro,' was created by artist Anton Stanton and the team at Mountain Forge. It features percussion instruments like chimes and is designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and shared musical experiences. The project was made possible through grants from Gary and Nancy Harrington and support from the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council. Residents are encouraged to visit the park to experience the installation. Some minor concerns were raised by neighbors regarding noise levels late at night [cite: 11-66]. The park is located at the south end of Duki Park, near the bandstand and bathrooms, and is situated against the creek [cite: 72-78].
Bay Area Voters to Decide on Transit Funding Measure in November
A proposed regional tax measure, SB63, also known as the Connect Bay Area Act, is set to appear on the November ballot. This measure aims to impose a half-percent sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara counties, and a one-percent sales tax in San Francisco for 14 years, starting next year. The revenue generated, projected at $980 million annually, will support transit agencies across the Bay Area, including BART, AC Transit, Caltrain, and Muni, which have experienced funding challenges due to decreased ridership during the pandemic. The funding will cover operational costs and support improvements and enhancements to transit services. The measure includes accountability and oversight provisions to ensure funds are used as outlined in the expenditure plan. Voters will decide in November whether to approve this measure to sustain local transit.
Pleasanton Announces Summer Events Including Fourth of July Celebration and County Fair
Pleasanton is gearing up for summer events, including the Fourth of July celebration, a concert at Duki Park on the new band stage by the Pleasanton Lions Club, and the County Fair starting in late June. The Fourth of July celebration is described as a longstanding tradition that brings the community together through music, patriotism, and civic pride, especially as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. The County Fair will feature exhibit halls showcasing local artists, jam makers, quilters, photographers, and more. The event organizers advise purchasing concert tickets in advance. Additionally, recent downtown events organized by the Pleasanton Downtown Association (PDA), such as the 'longest table' event and Country Fest, have been highly successful, receiving positive feedback from residents and local businesses. These events are credited with revitalizing the downtown area.
Stanford Health Care Tri Valley Begins Major Expansion of Pleasanton Campus
Stanford Health Care Tri Valley has broken ground on an East Wing expansion at its Pleasanton campus, formerly known as Valley Care. This $200 million investment aims to address the growing healthcare needs of the Tri Valley region, anticipating steady population growth. The expansion will more than double the hospital's emergency space, adding 66,000 square feet, 24 additional emergency room treatment bays, three triage rooms, a larger waiting area, and a dedicated fast-track treatment area to improve patient flow and reduce wait times. The project also includes infrastructure improvements to strengthen operational resilience during natural disasters and is designed to support future inpatient services as the community's needs evolve. Construction is expected to continue for several years, with phased openings beginning as early as 2029. This expansion is anticipated to create numerous jobs for healthcare professionals and will serve as a core hospital for the entire Tri Valley region, bringing specialists from the peninsula. The project is seen as a significant investment in the community, providing critical support services and high-quality healthcare close to home.
