Chabot Elementary Honors Student of the Year and Parent Volunteer of the Year
The school board recognized Remy Yada as the 2026 Chabot Student of the Year and Rocio Lopez as the Parent Volunteer of the Year. Remy was praised for her kindness, respect, integrity, academic focus, perseverance, empathy, and leadership, embodying positive impact and being a role model in school and her community. Rocio Lopez was honored for her dedication of countless hours supporting students, staff, and the school community in various roles. She was described as caring, dependable, and always willing to help, demonstrating unwavering commitment and a positive, professional spirit that strengthens the school community. Both were celebrated for their significant contributions.
Parent raises concerns about limited student access to AP and Honors courses
Emily Reichart presented data indicating limitations in student access to AP and Honors courses at Castro Valley High School, despite the district's motto 'all means all.' The current scheduling system denied 235 first-choice advanced course requests for the 2025-2026 school year, disproportionately affecting juniors and seniors. Reichart stated that one in three students seeking rigor were denied, with STEM courses showing high denial rates: AP Chemistry (58% denial, 89 students excluded), AP Biology (47 students excluded), and over 40 students excluded from honors English courses. Reichart contested the district's claim that students over-request courses, finding no evidence in the data. She proposed AP African American Studies, which requires a placement test, as a successful model for expansion. Reichart also highlighted system issues including communication failures (up to 10-day wait times for responses), an ineffective timing system, and lack of a formal waitlist for course openings. She emphasized the significant impact on college admissions.
Chabot Elementary School Highlights Success of Inquiry Journey Social Studies Curriculum
Dr. Hosseini presented on the implementation of the Inquiry Journey Social Studies Curriculum at Chabot Elementary School. This is the second year of implementation, which is school-wide for K-5 and integrated into weekly instruction. The curriculum is structured around central and essential inquiry questions, utilizing primary and secondary sources. Students analyze information, form evidence-based conclusions, and engage in academic discussions. Learning is connected to real-world issues, and students demonstrate understanding through authentic tasks and 'inquiry products.' An example from second grade involved students identifying campus littering and creating awareness posters. Teacher feedback highlights the curriculum's engaging nature, well-structured materials, and positive impact on student discussions and real-world connections. The school plans to continue refining implementation, supporting teachers, and expanding opportunities for student discussion and inquiry product development.
Alameda County Board of Education Candidate Critiques Fiscal Management and Science Scores
The school board heard from Joseph Gertser, a candidate for Alameda County Board of Education Trustee Area 4. Gertser critiqued the Alameda County Board of Education's perceived lack of influence on local school districts and their $90 million budget, which faces a projected $12 million deficit (climbed to $20 million by March). He favors responsible fiscal management to avoid layoffs and noted five school districts in Alameda County are in trouble, including Pleasanton with a negative certification. He contrasted this with Castro Valley's budgeting process, which he views positively. Gertser also expressed concern over mediocre science test scores at Castro Valley High School, arguing that strong science skills are crucial for high-tech jobs in the Bay Area. He invited the board to visit his website, alamedacountyelections.org, and requested their endorsement.
