Pittsford Town Board Approves Tax Cap Override, New Refuse Districts, and Addresses Energy Contract
The Pittsford Town Board held public hearings for Local Law Number Two of 2026, a tax cap override for 2027, and for proposed new refuse districts for 2027. The tax cap override is necessary because the refuse district program, which offers residents significant savings on trash collection, is considered a tax under state law. The town also addressed issues with the current trash hauler, Casella, and introduced Cole from Casella who specializes in resolving Pittsford's problems. Several new refuse districts were proposed, with residents expressing support due to cost savings and reduced traffic from trash trucks. The board also discussed the energy contract, recommending a 36-month fixed rate for electricity at just under 10 cents per kilowatt-hour to mitigate rising rates, and approved an encroachment agreement for a fence at 10 Hunters Point that would extend over a storm sewer easement, with the condition that the property owner holds the town harmless.
Frederick Douglass Statue Placement Proposal Referred to Parks and Recreation Board
Council Member Kathy presented an idea for temporarily placing a donated Frederick Douglass statue on town property in the new Pocket Park on Main Street. She proposed referring this question to the Parks and Recreation Volunteer Board for their review, following the standard process. The Mayor had previously mentioned this possibility. The board agreed to forward the request, and Council Member Sadler-LeBlanc offered to reach out to the Mayor for details such as the statue's dimensions to aid the Parks and Rec Board's assessment.
Town Board to Discuss Active Transportation Improvements and Address Concerns Over Illegal Bike Use
During the 'Other Business' segment, Council Member Sadler-LeBlanc brought up concerns about active transportation and safety, specifically regarding the challenges of biking in the hilly terrain of Pittsford, especially on the east side. She highlighted a communication from Reconnect Rochester proposing 'small connections' to improve access between neighborhoods, employment centers, schools, and recreational destinations, referencing a 'Pittsford Passage' concept and utilizing existing infrastructure like the pedestrian bridge behind Allens Creek Elementary School. Council Member Smith noted that the pedestrian bridge over 490 is already accessible and that Reconnect Rochester is working on 'bike boulevards.' The board agreed to add this topic to the agenda for a more detailed discussion at the next meeting. Separately, concerns were raised about young people riding illegal throttle bikes on roads, posing a danger to drivers and themselves. The town attorney is investigating a new state law regarding this issue, and the town is considering educational outreach to the community about safe and legal transportation options.
