Newberg Industrial Park Owners Urge Reopening of Key Intersection Citing Economic Impact

Andre and Kathleen Meyer, owners of Newberg Industrial Park, addressed the council regarding the trial closure of East Illinois Street, North Main Street, and the Oregon 240 intersection. They argued the closure, based on insufficient evidence and lack of transparency, has negatively impacted their ability to market their 100,000 sq ft industrial building, potentially leading to job losses as PPM Technologies is leaving. They urged the council to reopen the street immediately, emphasizing the need for objective analysis and public participation in transportation decisions. They noted the cancellation of an engineering study and the potential for temporary measures to become permanent. The council acknowledged their concerns and suggested they follow up with the City Manager.

Key highlights included visits to schools, heritage sites, and Hiroshima, with students emphasizing the impact of cultural understanding and personal growth. The program, ongoing for decades, aims to strengthen ties between Newburgh and Osago City. The city council also heard public comments, including a citizen's concerns about hiring ethics and a discussion about the library's updated internet policy.

Newburgh Council Approves Sewer Easement, Waste Management Rate Hike Amid Infrastructure Concerns

The City Council discussed the ongoing issues with the Springbrook sewer line, which has experienced recent spills due to infiltration and surcharging. A proposed solution involves constructing a new sewer line through Sportsman's Air Park to increase capacity and future-proof the system. This requires obtaining an easement from Sportsman's Air Park and potentially a land swap of city-owned property. The estimated cost is $4-5 million. The council voted to authorize staff to initiate negotiations for the easement and related land actions. Additionally, the council discussed a waste management rate increase request, heard public comments on service issues, and approved the rate increase.

Newburgh Council Initiates De-annexation Process for Flood-Prone Land; Extends Street Seats Program

The City Council considered a resolution to initiate the de-annexation of approximately 28.5 acres of land from the city limits. The land, located on both sides of the bypass and largely within a special flood hazard area, was annexed in 2006 as part of a larger 98-acre annexation. The property owners are requesting removal due to the difficulty of development. The council adopted Resolution 2026-4032 to initiate the process and proceeded with a legislative hearing and adopted Order 2026-0047, setting a final hearing for July 20th to consider the withdrawal. The decision also has implications for urban renewal districts and potential urban growth boundary adjustments under Senate Bill 1537. The council also reviewed the Street Seats program, ultimately voting to extend it for two years despite concerns about parking and lack of utilization.
