Miami Gardens City Council Recognizes Scholarship Recipients and Community Organizations, Advocates for Mentoring Appreciation Month
The City Council recognized multiple individuals and organizations for their contributions to the Miami Gardens community. This included acknowledging scholarship recipients for the 2026 Miami Gardens Scholarship program, highlighting Christopher Prophet as the first recipient of the $2,500 Miami Gardens Dream Scholarship. Additionally, the council presented commendations to Nationwide Youth Outreach and Athletics for their sustained community service since 2011, and to Women Impacting Neighborhoods (WIN) for their youth programs such as She Power Women and Project Up. The meeting also featured public comments advocating for June to be recognized as Mentoring Appreciation Month and acknowledging the efforts of various mentoring programs serving the youth in Miami Gardens.
Miami Gardens Council Approves Rezoning of Property to Light Industrial Amidst Resident Concerns
The City Council considered and approved the rezoning of a property located southwest of 4200 Northwest 167th Street from R-1 single-family to I-1 light industrial. The property is 4.21 acres and currently vacant. The proposed development includes a warehouse, parking, and landscaping. Modifications include planting trees, landscaping, and constructing a wall to shield commercial vehicles, along with connecting sidewalks. During the public comment period, residents raised concerns about potential air quality issues from truck traffic and emissions, and the impact on health, safety, and quality of life, urging a 'no' vote. The council ultimately approved the rezoning with a 4-1 vote.
Miami Gardens City Council Amends Platting and Vested Rights Ordinances
The City Council approved an ordinance amending Chapter 34, Articles seven of the Code of Ordinances related to platting procedures, administrative prohibition of action on tentative plats, vested rights, final plats, and building permits. Staff recommended approval, and there were no changes from the first reading. The motion passed 5-0.
Miami Gardens Approves Variance for Mixed-Use Development with Workforce Housing Component
The City Council approved a resolution granting Redwood Legacy TTM LLC a variance for a mixed-use development at 2775 Northwest 183rd Street. The variance reduces the required ground floor retail space from 10% to 6.88% and waives the 15% office space requirement. The project is on a 4.82-acre parcel owned by the city and will be an eight-story development with 232 units. The applicant stated that 100% of the units will be limited to workforce housing, with rental prices capped at 120% of the AMI. The motion passed 5-0.
Miami Gardens Authorizes Lease for Boutique Hotel Development Near Performing Arts Center
The City Council approved an ordinance authorizing a lease with P3 Markets LLC and Beckham Hospitality LLC for the development of a boutique hotel at 18600 Northwest 25th Avenue, adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. This ordinance allows the city manager and city attorney to negotiate and execute a lease and comprehensive agreement. The hotel is expected to have approximately 175 keys. Staff thanked Deputy City Manager Craig Clay, Economic Development Director George Wright, and Assistant City Attorney Zachary Stokes for their work on the negotiation.
