Medford Commission Approves 12-Unit Development with Partial Sidewalk Requirement

The Medford Site Plan and Architectural Commission considered a multi-family development at 130 Florence Avenue, including 12 dwelling units in three structures. The commission also reviewed requests for exceptions, including eliminating a planter strip, reducing street trees, and reducing sidewalk length. After extensive public testimony and deliberation, the commission approved the exception for the planter strip and street trees, partially approved the sidewalk exception by requiring 25 feet of sidewalk construction, and denied the remaining sidewalk exception. The overall development was subsequently approved with conditions related to utility easements and sidewalk construction. Several residents expressed concerns about traffic, parking, and the classification of Medford Heights Lane as an alley. The commission acknowledged the limitations imposed by state law on its ability to regulate parking and development standards.
