Annual Fundraiser to Support WHS Band Scholarships on Amanda Cunningham's Birthday
The annual Amanda J. Cunningham WHS Memorial Band Scholarship fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, July 29th, from 4 to 9 PM at BW3. This event, held on the week of Amanda's birthday, supports scholarships for WHS marching band students. In the 23 years since Amanda's passing, 43 scholarships totaling $1,000 each have been awarded. The fundraiser includes a 50-50 drawing, gift cards, gift baskets, and 15% of meal proceeds going to the scholarship. Donations of gift cards and baskets are still being accepted.
Massillon City Council Considers Data Center Legislation Amidst Moratorium
The Massillon City Council is considering legislation that would allow for data centers, following a moratorium that was placed to allow for due diligence and further research. The council is exploring zoning code changes (I-1 or I-2) and water usage requirements, such as mandating recycled or wastewater treatment water. They are also monitoring state-level hearings on the topic. The council stressed that there have been no data center bids submitted to the city yet, and the current actions are preventative. An external attorney has been hired due to a conflict of interest with the city's law department. The moratorium's 60-day extension was voted on, with the possibility of further extensions if needed.
Roundabout Construction Underway; More Projects Planned for Traffic Improvement
Construction has begun on a roundabout at Tremont and Maine streets. While the construction will cause temporary inconvenience, it is expected to improve traffic flow and safety in the long run. The city is also evaluating roundabouts at other locations, including 21 and Lake, and Lake at Erie Street/First Street, due to state requirements and to alleviate traffic bottlenecks. Public meetings have been held for these projects. The city emphasizes that roundabouts, while initially disliked by some, become efficient once drivers adapt to them and lanes are clearly marked.
Aqua Seeks Water Rate Increase for Expansion, City Council Seeks Control
Aqua has requested a water rate increase, which the city council is reviewing. The company states the increase is necessary for expansion and infrastructure upgrades, not due to data centers. The council wants to maintain control over rate increases, as appealing to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) could result in higher approved rates. Water remains the city's cheapest utility. Aqua plans to drill another well in Jackson and expand their facilities.
