Magna City Council Discusses Tree Maintenance, Removal, and Replacement Policies
The Magna City Council addressed concerns about tree maintenance and removal during public comment and council discussion. Sabrina Weber expressed concern over inconsistent tree maintenance, the sudden removal of over 40 trees without clear replacement plans, and a perceived lack of equal standards across neighborhoods. Mayor Sudberry explained that tree removals are often necessary due to infrastructure damage (lifting sidewalks, interfering with utilities) and that property owners are responsible for trees on private property. He also noted that trees along Main Street are being replaced with varieties that won't interfere with streetlights. The council acknowledged the need for clearer communication and consistent application of standards.
Magna City Council Adopts Budget Amendment for CRA Fund
The Magna City Council held a public hearing and adopted Resolution R2026-33, which pertains to a budget amendment for the Magna CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) fund. This amendment reflects funds received from Salt Lake County Regional Development, totaling over $3 million, and expenditures of over $600,000 thus far in the fiscal year. The purpose of the amendment is to formally account for these funds and authorize their spending in alignment with the original budget's anticipations.
Magna City Council Establishes Ground Rules for Advisory Committees
The Magna City Council discussed and approved an ordinance (2026-12) to establish ground rules for advisory committees. The ordinance clarifies that these committees will serve at the council's pleasure, have no funding or decision-making authority, and will purely act as a resource to advise the council. Because they are advisory, they will not be subject to the same notice requirements as bodies like the Planning Commission.
Magna City Council Approves Grant for Pickleball Courts at Neighborhood Park
The Magna City Council discussed and approved an interlocal agreement for the TERCC grant to fund pickleball courts at the Magna Neighborhood Park. While a previous grant for the Webster Center was closed due to restrictiveness in amendments, the pickleball grant is considered less problematic. The council decided to move forward with the grant as is, with the understanding that amendments are highly restricted. The possibility of also funding pickleball courts at Copper Park with other funds was discussed, as was the potential for other TRCC grants, such as for a dog park or improvements at Mantle Park and Empress.
Magna City Council Addresses Waste Management Challenges, Illegal Dumping, and Recycling Rates
During the City Council meeting, Councilman Terry George reported on the Waste Management program, noting an increase of 51.6% in dumpster usage compared to the previous year, with over 91 dumpsters collected daily. Despite this improvement, significant issues persist with illegal dumping of tires and mattresses, which are costly to dispose of. The council discussed the low participation in the bulk recycling program for mattresses and is exploring a curbside program for later this summer. Concerns were also raised about residents' poor recycling habits in blue bins, with an 8% violation rate and potential fines being implemented. The high cost of disposing of mattresses and tires was highlighted as a barrier to proper disposal.
