City Approves Zoning Amendments for Mobile Food Vendors in Response to State Law, Notes Housing Boom
The city is amending its zoning ordinance to align with new state law (House Bill 2844) that removes the city's authority to permit mobile food vendors, transferring this to the state. The ordinance amendments will remove the city's permit requirement while maintaining existing operational standards. Mobile food vendors will be restricted to food truck parks requiring a Special Use Permit (SUP) or special events with specific conditions such as owner permission, a duration limit of three days (extendable by the city manager), prohibition from required parking spaces and fire lanes, adherence to noise ordinances, TABC permits if alcohol is sold, and the use being incidental to the primary property use. The commission recommended approval of these amendments to the city council. Staff also provided an update on a significant increase in housing starts over the past decade, particularly on the southwest side of town, anticipating continued growth with the upcoming Grand Parkway construction.
