Kent Receives Federal Approval for Train Quiet Zone, Horns to Cease by Late August
The Federal Rail Administration (FRA) has officially approved the city of Kent's train quiet zone, which will eliminate the use of train horns on the Burlington Northern tracks. This approval comes after over a decade of work with the railroad, the local utilities commission, and the FRA. The quiet zone is set to begin as early as August 24th. While the train horns will no longer sound routinely, safety features such as crossing arms, flashing lights, and bells will remain in place. Conductors will still be able to use the horn if they observe an obstruction or safety hazard on the tracks. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and businesses in downtown Kent and surrounding areas.
