Auburn Council Reviews Proposed 15-Year Franchise Agreement with Astound Broadband
The council reviewed a draft ordinance (number 7024) for a new franchise agreement with Astound Broadband LLC for wireline telecommunication services. The agreement, valid for 15 years, covers all public ways within the city and future expansion of Astound's facilities. Existing facilities were previously authorized in 2015 and are currently on a month-to-month status. Future expansion, alterations, or upgrades will require a construction permit. The public hearing for this agreement is scheduled for July 6th, 2026.
Auburn Council Considers Revisions to Non-Conforming Use Regulations
The council discussed proposed code changes to address non-conforming uses, aiming to provide more flexibility and assurance for existing property owners impacted by recent zoning updates. The changes include modifying the improvement investment threshold to a rotating 5-year basis, allowing modest expansions administratively up to 10% without a hearing examiner, and extending the discontinuation period for non-conforming uses from 180 days to up to 3 years with potential for extension, subject to conditions such as no open code enforcement violations and active marketing of the property. The planning commission unanimously recommended forwarding these changes to the council for consideration.
