Council Addresses Noise Pollution Concerns, Including Gas-Powered Blowers and Live Music
The council discussed the issue of noise pollution, specifically from gas-powered leaf blowers, following a public comment from Lee Brooker and ongoing concerns from residents. The discussion also touched upon live music noise and potential ordinance amendments. The council decided to send the matter of gas-powered blowers to the Sustainability Commission via the Community Development committee for study and recommendations. They also considered scheduling a public hearing in July or August to discuss noise ordinances related to live music, with input from the new police chief and venue owners.
Council Approves Consent Agenda, Postpones Income Tax Ordinance Pending Election Results
The council approved the consent agenda, which included several ordinances and resolutions. Notably, Draft 2026-53, a resolution declaring the necessity of an election to amend sections of the codified ordinances regarding the city's income tax, was part of the consent agenda. However, a related ordinance, Draft 2026-054, which would amend the codified ordinances to reflect the potential new tax, was postponed indefinitely. This was because the attorneys advised against passing the ordinance until after the election on the tax, to ensure it only takes effect if the tax is approved by voters.
Kent Officially Designated as a Purple Heart City
The council recognized Kent as a Purple Heart City and Portage County as a Purple Heart County. This designation celebrates the city's dedication and support for honoring combat wounded veterans and their families. A plaque was presented to the city by the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Consent Agenda Permanently Adopted to Streamline Council Meetings
Council member Ms. Shafer Bish suggested making the consent agenda a permanent feature of the council's meeting procedures, as it has been on the pending list for over a year and has been working well to streamline meetings. The motion to remove the consent agenda from the pending list and make it permanent was seconded and passed.
