Kennett City Council 6-2-26
Published: Jun 2, 2026
Chamber of Commerce Contract Renewed with Amended Representation Clause
The council considered the renewal of the annual contract with the Kennett Chamber of Commerce. An amendment was proposed and approved to strike the clause requiring the Chamber director to serve on the regional tourism committee, as this committee no longer exists. The contract will stipulate that the Chamber director will represent Kennett on the Bootheel Regional Planning Commission. The contract amount is $25,000. [cite: 129-175]
Street Department Sells Used Vehicle Equipment
The council reviewed bids for street department vehicle equipment. Bids were accepted for a 1989 Chevrolet truck, a 1996 Ford F-150, a 1994 Ford ambulance, a 2005 Ford F-350, two 2002 Yamaha four-wheelers, and a wood chipper. Funds from these sales will go to the street department. [cite: 74-108]
Senior Services Receive $65,000 in Tax Allocation Distribution
The council reviewed and approved the recommended tax allocation distribution for senior services for FY27. A total of $65,000 was allocated, distributed as $40,000 to Oak Senior Nutrition Center, $10,000 to DNA Senior Companion Program, and $15,000 to Ministerial Alliance Helping Hands. This allocation is based on available tax revenue, which was less than the $145,000 requested. [cite: 180-206]
John's Park Sidewalk Completed; Kenneth Street Demolition Underway
The administrator provided updates on completed projects and upcoming work. An ADA-compliant sidewalk was installed in John's Park prior to the America 250 event. The demolition of a home at 711 Kenneth Street is underway, with DNR acknowledging documentation, and the lot is expected to look better within a week. The administrator also noted that the council will need to ratify an overage of $1,795 for the demolition project, bringing the total cost to $21,795 from an approved $20,000. The budget for FY27 is being prepared for review at the next meeting. [cite: 313-335]
Planning and Zoning Committee Voting Rights and Membership Clarified
Clarification was sought regarding voting rights of the mayor and council members on the Planning and Zoning Committee. The current ordinance specifies 12 citizen members, and discussions ensued about whether the mayor, council members, and code enforcement officer were intended to be voting members. It was determined that the attorney can change the ordinance to exempt the mayor and council members from voting, as this is an option under state law. The committee currently has nine members, and three more are needed to meet the ordinance requirement of 12 citizen members. The attorney will provide revised ordinance language for the next meeting.
