Public Works Facility Needs Study Presented, Options for Expansion or New Construction Discussed

The Public Works Department is exploring options for improving its facilities, which were constructed between 1989 and 1990. A space needs study was authorized in 2025 with Kluber Architects and Engineers to analyze current and projected needs. The study assessed existing facilities, identified operational inefficiencies, and considered future growth. Two primary options were presented: expanding and renovating existing facilities, or constructing a new consolidated facility. Option one, expanding and renovating the existing Public Works Center and Fleet Services Facility, is estimated to cost between $31 and $35 million. Option two, a new consolidated facility on a hypothetical site, is estimated to cost between $53 and $57 million. The study highlighted significant deficiencies in both existing buildings, including aging equipment, accessibility issues, and inadequate space. The committee discussed the pros and cons of each option, with the expansion option appearing more affordable but involving phasing that could disrupt operations. The new facility option offers more optimal conditions but excludes the cost of acquiring land. The committee decided to defer a decision pending further information and exploration of grant opportunities.
