Grove City Secures Over $3.2 Million in Grants for Infrastructure, Parks, and Downtown Projects
Mayor Stage announced several significant funding awards for Grove City. The city received a $2,200,000 check from the Middle Ohio Regional Planning Commission and the Lake Us Group for the Hoover Road I-71 SUP path project, which will improve safety and pedestrian access. Additionally, the state's capital budget awarded $500,000 for the Town Center Park and $500,000 for the little theater off Broadway, contributing to downtown revitalization. The Sensory Gardens at Gantz Park were also dedicated, and the city participated in a 250th-anniversary tree planting event.
Council Member Requests Prompt Release of Data Center Information and Scheduling of Charter Amendment Discussions
Council Member Linga requested clarification on the availability of data center information, noting it was supposed to be published online but was not yet accessible. He urged whoever is responsible to ensure the information is released promptly. Linga also asked council leadership to set dates for upcoming meetings regarding the charter amendment ideas and other related discussions.
McDowell Road Improvement Project Awarded $4 Million in Funding
Chuck Smith reported that the McDowell Road Project, improving McDowell Road from Stringtown Road to White Road, was bid at $3.9 million, approximately $400,000 under the engineer's estimate. The city received $4,071,000 in loans and grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission for this project. Construction is expected to begin soon.
Council Member Outlines Key Priorities: Data Centers, Charter Review, Community Center, and Budget
Council Member Ms. Burroughs discussed upcoming work items, including establishing the data center task force within 12 months, continuing the conversation on the city's form of government and potential charter update for the ballot, and evaluating a multi-generational community center, with a draft report due June 29th. She also mentioned the 2027 city budget submission and the need for meetings to complete the work. Burroughs emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and citizen involvement, referencing the work of task forces and the community center, and urged council to commit to timely completion of these tasks.
Resident Advocates for 'Community Consent Amendment' for Data Center Projects, Citing Environmental and Trust Concerns
Jen Belt voiced strong support for a 'community consent amendment' to give residents a vote on large-scale data center projects. She cited a Carnegie Mellon economist's estimate of $25 billion in pollution and health-related costs from U.S. data centers in 2025 and the American Lung Association's identification of data centers as a growing source of air quality concerns due to high electricity demands and diesel backup generators. Belt noted that over 800 community groups nationwide are challenging data center development, reflecting a broader mistrust. Locally, residents have expressed mistrust due to alleged unanswered FOIA requests, private meetings, and dinners with city officials. The proposed amendment aims to give citizens a voice in developments that could significantly impact water usage and require substantial energy infrastructure.
