Downtown Traffic Lights Replaced with Stop Signs
The council discussed the transition from traffic lights to stop signs in the downtown Broad Street and Chestnut Street area. The change is expected to occur over the next 30-45 days. New rules for navigating four-way stops were clarified, emphasizing yielding to the right when two vehicles arrive simultaneously, and always yielding to pedestrians. The change aims to improve traffic flow and safety.
Parking Restrictions Proposed for First Street and Police Building Lots
An ordinance was presented for its first reading, amending city code section 118-191 to restrict parking in specific areas. These areas include the parking area on First Street and the parking lot at the police building between Broad Street and Locust Street. The council will vote on this ordinance next week.
Community Events and Local Honoree Recognized
Councilman Robinson highlighted community events, including a dedication service for a blessing box in District 3 and the Juneteenth events across the city. He specifically honored Mr. Floyd L. Donald for hosting the longest Juneteenth celebration in Alabama, bringing it first to Gaston.
Electrical Plans Approved for Senior Wellness Center
The council authorized an agreement with Egroup Incorporated to provide electrical plans and specifications for the senior wellness center park and track lighting. The cost for these services is $10,500.
Barbarian Challenge Event Praised for Success
Councilman Robinson commended the city workers and Ngalo Falls staff for the successful 'Barbarian Challenge' event, noting it went off with perfection and everyone had a great time. He also mentioned the positive impact on economic development, as events like these bring more people to the city.
