Upcoming Community Events and Holiday Schedule Announced
Council members discussed upcoming community events. Council member M. Green highlighted the upcoming Saturday bicycle rodeo at the community center, which includes bike skills, safety, and repair workshops, and will be preceded by the farmers market and a 'Disney in Place' event. This event segues into the '250 Ride' on Sunday the 28th at Liga Landing, a 25-mile round trip. Council member Green also mentioned Jack's Fest, the annual Independence Day celebration on July 3rd at the public safety complex, featuring food trucks, activities, live music, and fireworks, noting that a road behind Walmart will be closed. The Sunny Bites Food Bank will be at JCO on the second and fourth Tuesdays for distribution. It was also noted that city offices would be closed on Monday, July 6th, for the observed Independence Day holiday.
City Council Approves Personnel Changes and New Hires
The council considered and approved several personnel actions, including accepting the resignation of Austin Goodwin from Wastewater Operator 3 and Water Operator 2, effective June 30, 2026. They also approved amended job titles and descriptions for various library positions, including Library Specialist Acquisitions, Library Specialist Cataloging, Library Specialist Information Technology, Library Specialist Youth Services, Part-time Library Assistant, and Recreations and Special Events Coordinator, with specific individuals placed in these roles. Additionally, the employment of Riley Warren Small as a Police Officer and Ian Lee Martin Hammonds as a Police Officer was approved.
City Council Approves CDBG Application for Street Paving Project
The council considered and accepted the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for paving five streets. The application aims to benefit low-to-moderate income persons, with a total project cost of $555,577, of which $500,000 would be covered by the grant and $55,577 by the city. The streets to be addressed are Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, Quill Avenue Northwest, Oak Avenue Northwest, Georgia Street Northwest, and Florida Street Northwest. The project is expected to benefit approximately 160 individuals, with an estimated cost-benefit ratio of $3,000 per beneficiary. Funding is not guaranteed as it is a competitive application, and if approved, the project would likely commence in the summer of 2027.
