City Approves $33,761 One-Time Pay Adjustment for Retirees
The city council adopted Resolution 2026-15, authorizing a one-time pay adjustment for retirees and beneficiaries of deceased retirees, as authorized by Act 608. The total amount for this adjustment is $33,761, which is the city's portion as advised by the state. This action is seen as a standard practice across the state to support former employees and their families, and no downside was identified.
Mayor Updates on Downtown Property Work, Recognizes Student Achievements, Previews Canyon Center and July 4th Events
Mayor presented an update on the Farmers Morgan group's work at the GH Metal property, located between Second and Fourth Streets. They are working at the theater on specific days, with a closing presentation scheduled for Thursday afternoon for public viewing and input. The mayor also congratulated students from Fort Payne High School's drone class, Nathaniel Blevens and Samuel Knight, for winning state championships, and Riley Hol for winning second in state photography. These students were competing nationally in Atlanta. TC McLemore from the Canyon Center discussed upcoming events, including the 13th annual 'Bluegrass on the Rim' on June 13th, featuring the band 'Three on a String'. The mayor also announced the Fourth of July celebration on July 2nd at the Fort Payne Sports Complex, with gates opening at 6:00 PM and fireworks at 8:45 PM, including music by James Robert Trio and free photos from Bama Photos.
City Council Approves Liens for Property Cleanup on Three Northeast Properties
The city council approved resolutions authorizing assessments against three properties for cleanup costs: 303 Lincoln Avenue Northeast, 1956 Sanders Avenue Northeast, and 1506 Lincoln Avenue Northeast. These assessments are to recoup costs incurred by the city for cleaning up neglected properties where homeowners had died or the properties were foreclosed upon. This process involves filing a lien on the property taxes to recover the city's expenses. It was noted that this is a recurring issue, and similar resolutions may be needed annually. The council voted unanimously to accept these resolutions and place the liens.
City Sells Two Surplus Properties, Announces Third for Bid
The council addressed two surplus property sales. The first, at 607 Cherokee Drive Southwest, was sold to Matt Jones for $200. This property is described as having a steep drop-off, limiting its usability and potential for development. The second property, at 4025th Street Northeast, was sold to Northcut Real Estate LLC for $3,000, which was the highest bid among three offers. This lot is considered buildable, though small, with potential for a small footprint development. A third surplus property, over three acres on the northwest side of town, was announced, with a 30-day period for public offers ending June 30th, 2026.
Council Reviews Fee Increase for Street Vacation Requests, Approves Property Cleanup Liens
The council held a first reading of Ordinance 2026-11, which proposes to increase the fee for requesting the vacation of a street or alleyway from its original 2005 amount to $400. This increase is intended to cover the rising publication and administrative costs associated with the process, as current fees are insufficient. The ordinance will be voted on at the next meeting. The council also addressed and approved three resolutions (2026-16, 2026-17, 2026-18) authorizing assessments against specific properties for cleanup costs, with a motion to accept and place liens made by John and seconded by Mike.
