Enumclaw Proclaims July as Parks and Recreation Month; Inclusive Playground Feasibility Approved
The City Council read a proclamation declaring July 2026 as Parks and Recreation Month. The proclamation highlighted the integral role of parks and recreation programs in communities, emphasizing their importance for quality of life, citizen health, and economic and environmental well-being. It also noted their contribution to building healthy, active communities, providing therapeutic services, and improving mental and emotional health. Furthermore, the proclamation recognized the role of parks in preserving ecological beauty and connecting people with nature. Separately, community services discussed potential fundraising efforts for an inclusive playground, with three possible locations identified: McFarland Park, the area near the library, and Holdner Park. The park board and CSC committee approved moving forward with a feasibility review for this project.
Residents Urge Enumclaw Council to Address Critical Traffic Safety Issues
During the public comment period, residents voiced significant concerns about traffic safety at the intersection of Cole and Stevenson, and along Torrilla Lane and Melody Lane. Concerns included speeding, failure to stop at stop signs, pedestrian safety, and lack of ADA-compliant curb cuts. One resident reported a recent fatality at Cole and Stevenson, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention. Residents requested measures such as pedestrian yellow signs, speed lights, speed guns for enforcement, lower-cost traffic calming measures like pavement markings, and updated ADA ramps. The impact of cut-through traffic due to closures on Cole Street was also highlighted. Additionally, concerns were raised about pedestrian safety at Highway 410 and Garrett Street, and the relocation of ADA parking near the library.
Staffing Challenges and Safety Technology Updates Discussed by Enumclaw Committees
The Finance and Technology Committee did not meet due to a lack of quorum. Separately, the Public Safety Committee discussed staffing levels. The dispatch currently has an overhire due to one staff member moving in July, with a new dispatcher in training. The jail has one vacancy, with a candidate in background checks. Patrol has two spots to fill and two officers in field training, resulting in a deficit of four usable officers. In anticipation of summer events, SROs and detectives may be redeployed to cover calls if needed. The committee also discussed the E-motorcycle ordinance, which was approved for first reading tonight, and Flock camera updates expected by mid-July. The King County Coalition of Small Police Agencies is considering a one-year probationary membership for the University of Washington Police Department.
Enumclaw City Council Adopts Ordinance Regulating Electric Motorcycles
The city council discussed and approved an ordinance amendment to regulate the use and operation of electric motorcycles within the city. This ordinance aims to address safety concerns arising from the increasing popularity of these vehicles, which are often operated on public streets, sidewalks, and trails. The new regulations define electric motorcycles, restrict their use areas, establish equipment and operator requirements, and outline enforcement penalties. The amendment was approved by the Public Safety Committee and is intended to enhance public safety and provide enforcement clarity.
Enumclaw City Council Approves Funding Allocation for July 4th Parade Security and Staffing
The City Council approved Resolution Number 1881, authorizing an amendment to the service agreement with the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce. This amendment allocates $15,000 previously authorized by the council to cover specific costs associated with the Fourth of July parade. The funds will be used for barriers to line the parade route ($8,500), overtime compensation for six additional city staff to manage the event ($2,500), and security and event staffing hired by the Chamber ($4,000). This resolution formalizes the breakdown and expenditure of funds already approved by the council.
