Cyprus City Council Introduces Stricter Fireworks Ordinance with Increased Penalties

The City Council considered and introduced an ordinance to add enforcement authority to the existing prohibition on fireworks. The ordinance proposes administrative fines, with penalties increasing for repeat offenses, and includes provisions for social host liability. The council amended the proposed penalties to $2,000 for a first violation, $4,000 for a second, and $6,000 for a third, modeled after the Buena Park ordinance. The city attorney clarified that this is not an emergency ordinance and will not take effect before July 4th. The Police Chief outlined an aggressive enforcement approach for the upcoming July 4th weekend, including canceled days off for officers, additional personnel focused solely on fireworks enforcement, and undercover operations. The discussion also touched on the potential use of drones for law enforcement in the future, though not immediately for this ordinance.

Orange County Vector Control Highlights High Mosquito Season and Control Strategies

Ryan Brannon from Orange County Vector Control presented on mosquito awareness and control efforts. He highlighted the current high mosquito season, emphasizing that mosquitoes are cold-blooded and reproduce quickly in warmer temperatures. Brannon explained the Vector Control's approach, which prioritizes education and larvicides over spraying, reserving spraying for disease outbreaks. He discussed various vectors, including mosquitoes, fire ants, rats, fleas, and ticks, and detailed the methods used for control, such as larvicides (Bacillus Therogenesis isrolinesis), mosquito traps for monitoring, public outreach programs, and educational performances. He reported on the prevalence of flea-borne typhus and West Nile virus in the county, noting a significant increase in typhus cases. Brannon also addressed the Aedes mosquito ('ankle biters'), an invasive species that can breed in small amounts of water, and traditional mosquitoes that spread West Nile virus. The presentation included information on mosquito fish, the sterile insect technique, and rodent control advice. Mayor Pro Tem Chang noted that Cypress is a high-risk area for mosquitoes and encouraged residents to report mosquito issues to OC Vector Control.
